Government imposed fees have forced us to make the following changes to CarJam.
No more FREE vehicle information from the Government
As many of you will be aware, on the 1st January 2011 the NZ Government’s New Zealand Transport Agency (“NZTA”) introduced fees for what was previously free vehicle data – which CarJam sources from the NZTA Motor Vehicle Register (MVR).
We, motorists of New Zealand, have already paid for the maintenance of MVR through registration, license and other vehicle fees and taxes.
These fees make it impossible for CarJam to continue to provide unlimited numbers of free reports to our users and still keep our prices for paid reports as low as they are.
Continue to voice against government decision:
– Email the Minister of Transport
– Sign the Petition please ignore the donation payment to the petition website
CarJam FREE vehicle information
As a direct result of these changes, CarJam will now provide up to 3 free vehicle lookups per month for each registered user. You will also earn free lookups while purchasing CarJam Reports. This allows us to continue to provide the best available free vehicle information, albeit at significant cost to us.
If you are likely to want more than 3 free lookups per month then registering and/or setting up an account once registered will render you some discount options. The best discount is being “on account” but it requires a minimum of $20 top-up.
CarJam Full Reports
The cost of the full reports will stay the same.
Accounts for everyone
We have reduced the minimum top up for accounts from $100 down to $20. This will make it economical for everyone to maintain an account. You can also share an account with your friends.
Jamlerts
Now default to 3 months. Existing jamlerts are reset to one month.
Other minor changes
The NZTA changes have also required us to move to a system which does not allow computerised access to our system to make sure we are not liable for charges generated by screen scraping or other fraudulent access. This system will require site users to identify some letters from a graphical representation.
Happy New Year!
All the best for 2011 and wishing we could continue as we were but the government appear to be intransigent on this issue. If you wish to protest to the government over these changes see the box below …

→ Important Carjam Update
This information is fantastic when looking to purchase a new car. Taking this free information off us is disgusting… another ridiculous government idea! Our registration fees are high enough surely to compensate for the running of this service. NZTA – this is SLACK of you!
— Tim Owen on January 1st, 2011 at 1:26 am
Apart from this carjam issue, I had always thought that Stephen Joyce showed a reasonable and pragmatic approach to the issues under his control. I felt he could be relied upon to be fair and sensible and to be moderately free from political expediency. I no longer feel this way. Given the groundswell of opinion about carjam from those who know best about it, i.e. the users, I am astounded at Joyce’s intransigence. From now on I have a different view of the man. He’s just another arrogant politician who is ready to shaft the people of this country by taking money from them for what they have a right to obtain free, having already paid for the acquisition of the information. Would that Joyce would hang his head in shame, but don’t hold your breath! Keep up the pressure – this is election year.
— technical on January 1st, 2011 at 10:47 am
The idea of 3 free reports per month is completely pointless. Free informaiton could be used to help stop crimes (e.g stolen car reported on the news, plate is typed into carjam). Now becouse of YOU stephen, when I go to buy my first car off trademe, I run the risk of being thrown in prison for possession of a stolen car (for all I know, the car i buy could be stolen) and its all your fault
— anonymous on January 1st, 2011 at 1:51 pm
this government loves putting the boot in.
happy new year!
absolute pack of twats.
can’t wait ’til we have to pay to shit in our own homes.
— baldrick on January 1st, 2011 at 5:39 pm
Nuts, CARJAM has been a great free service, from out of interest seeing an old car on the road not knowing what make model and year it is to being able to find out later on CARJAM or seeing a dodgy car in the neighbourhood, checking its status, WOF and Rego and reporting it to the local council who have taken action. That’s all over now so this is now one way of removing the public’s involvement. Bring back the old CARJAM. 3 Free reports and registering is a pain so that’s me out of this and I guess many others, I am sure another site will pop up.
— Bob on January 1st, 2011 at 10:43 pm
Bob, it’s not us. The information used to come to us for free. Not any more. The government has changed it despite us (motorists) already paying for it through the registration fees. From Jan 2011, the information comes at a significant cost to us. We cannot give away unlimited free reports. Please continue to voice to the Minister of Transport and/or sign the petition. Maybe one day they will reverse or maybe new government if Labour comes to power will reverse this. Cheerio
— Anton on January 2nd, 2011 at 1:19 pm
CARJAM ANOTHER AWESOME (FREE) SERVICE F**KED BY THE GOVERNMENT AND ITS ALMIGHTY NEED FOR GREED, THANKS NATIONAL! I SUPPOSE YOU HAVE TO FIND SOME WAY TO COVER THE PAY RISES YOU GIVE YOURSELVES, CHARGING PEOPLE FOR SERVICES THEY HAVE ALREADY PAYED FOR BRILLIANT YOU WANKERS!!
— Russell on January 2nd, 2011 at 2:59 pm
I am ashamed to have voted National, and now I will deny I had done anything so stupid.
This is the second time this idiot Joyce has really annoyed me with a stupid decision.
Would someone please tell me ONE thing Key’s idiots have done for this country – except of course their inspired kick start to the economy by raising GST – that really got the economy moving!
its called beening ripped off. the goverment could, but its put in the two hard busket.
— ofta on January 2nd, 2011 at 7:46 pm
UNBELIEVABLE!!! Yet ANOTHER example of our present Governments Greedy Money Grabbing! They will be demanding the very shirts of our backs next, SHAME ON THEM!!!
— BiLL Fairs on January 2nd, 2011 at 10:35 pm
curious, where abouts in the new law does it state that you can give 3 free reports a month? actually
— mike on January 3rd, 2011 at 12:37 am
@Bob you sound like a nark, why would you report someone’s car to the council because they couldn’t afford at that time to get it fixed or buy another overpriced reg, and now they have further fines because a ‘good samaritan’ didn’t mind his own business and rang the parking wardens, it sucks that we can’t get unlimited free reports for legitimate reasons but I’m glad that it has stopped people like you from supporting governments revenue gathering, kind of funny in a way that the NZTA revenue gathering has now effected you helping local councils revenue gathering
— Marc on January 4th, 2011 at 2:20 pm
as one who has worked in the motor industry supplying parts to the trade, it is apparent to me the implications of such a move by the powers that be will send this industry into a quogmire of dispair as we try to supply and fit the correct parts for the vehicles being serviced by the trade. whilst i try to get it right, putting the onus on the repairer to get the right details from the client to order the right parts for their car and in a timely manner, is going to cause a lot of people be get really angry out there and we don’t need more angry people out on our roads.
— Joe Motors on January 5th, 2011 at 8:42 am
Can you tell me what charges cost please per look up, we are interested in setting up an account. Thanks Jim
— Jim McDougall on January 5th, 2011 at 12:09 pm
The announcement of the site not being free is well and good and we have signed the petition and protested a number of times, but what is the actual charge after the 3 free ones?? Is there a discount above a certain number per month??
It is against NZs civil rights to take away our democratic right to have free access to vehicles that we check to see if it is stolen or money owing on it We have already paid in fuel taxes ACC levies also paid into the Government Consolidated Fund where access is again denied to us of how Government spends this money.First Govt s are owned by the people for the people and I strongly advise MPs to delete this draconian law as the elections are this year and Im sure Car Jam will remind us of this debacle that has been enforced on us.
— Paul Teio on January 5th, 2011 at 4:24 pm
Anybody know WHY the change of stance from the NZTA? I feel that it is not a simple budget cutting exercise, but there is possibly some lobby group behind this? Free Carjam has substatially levelled the playing field in the the used car market – I see time and again on sites like trademe where dodgy sellers get caught out because somebody ran a free report. It seems like that there is vested commercial interest to lock away this information behind a paywall.
— mw on January 5th, 2011 at 4:26 pm
im gutted carjam was a great tool for some one like me
who buys and sells cars on a regular basis going to look at an old project car jump on the mobile ph and check that cars have live reg ect. but no more THANKS ALOT JOYCE YOUR AS MUCH OF A JEARK AS THE REST OF THEM.
thanks car jam for having such a great servis for as long as you did . and for contuing to try help nz motrists as much as you can
— Elliot on January 6th, 2011 at 9:12 am
I used to use carjam atleast 20 times a day for my job. along with my co workers i am now struggling to source the correct parts for cars as a lot of people do not know hoe to find the chassis number of their vehicle but could easily get their rego. Carjam was a huuuuuuuge help in my workplace and without it everything is slowed down and much more stressful for me and customers.
— Baz on January 6th, 2011 at 11:24 am
This site is awesome. This is another way of the government getting money for doing NOTHING!!!! Now how do you find out if the W.O.F. that is on the the car is legal or if there is road user charges outstanding??? I hope that someone see sense soon 7 we can all go back to using this site for free.
— Doug on January 7th, 2011 at 10:08 am
Paul Teio, right on! And we already paid for the Motor Vehicle Register with out registration, license a and other vehicle fees (taxes).
— Anton on January 7th, 2011 at 6:42 pm
Mike, the information is no longer free to us. If it was, like before, there would be no problem. We have battled the government, NZTA and the minster for the last month and a bit and wasted about $20K in doing so. They are just ignorant and do not want to dialogue to keep the information free. Feels like dictatorship, really. Even 3 “free” (no longer free) to us is hurting us at the moment. Sorry. We hate it more than you do — trust us!
— Anton on January 7th, 2011 at 6:50 pm
Jim, account fees are listed here.
— Anton on January 7th, 2011 at 6:54 pm
M Hollinger, government keeps stonewalling us. We still deliver 3 free ones per user per month (even though it costs to us). When you register, there is a discount.
— Anton on January 7th, 2011 at 6:56 pm
what a pack of fuck wits dont worry guys i dont think national will get into this election would be good if we can all go out to parliment itself and demand outside the door for free information to come back carjam was a site to help us from buying a lemon and there response is you can call us and we will give you that information that just a whole waste of time when you could do it all yourself hope parliment perishes to the ground
— phil on January 8th, 2011 at 7:19 pm
Thanks “National” yourve shafted us left right and centre since yourve got in
— Paul on January 10th, 2011 at 9:22 am
Carjam is – I mean WAS a vital tool for us in the industry, I’m a parts manager in a small town dealership and I found Carjam a godsend prior to 2011, it meant our customers could drop their vehicle into our workshop for repair quotes and I would only need their rego plate to get (most of the time) all the information (chassis, engine code etc) I needed to contact the genuine parts dealer or aftermarket sector and procure the right parts first time. Now I have to spend time I do not have, getting all the vehicle details off the vehicle when it is in the workshop – meaning more silly little sidetracks for me I cannot afford.
I acknowledge we are in a tough economy at this stage but surely some kind of compromise can be struck between the NZTA (NaZi Transport Agency) and Carjam, surely the government can see the benefits of keeping this useful tool free as mentioned above, giving vehicle buyers that extra confidence and peace of mind before hitting the buy now button on that trade me auction and cutting down on vehicle crime as we as users now have the power to monitor what comes and goes in our neighbourhoods.
Just my very big 2 cents.
— Paul on January 10th, 2011 at 1:39 pm
Who in their right mind expects this arrogant pack of bastards to take any notice of what “we the people” have to say. They know damn well what short memories we have nad how willing we are to trade-off “privillages” for a few cents tax cut.
Look what happened with the ACC Levies to Motorcycles, march on Parliment, Consultation, Suggestions made to govt, followed by the shaft.
Maybe if these depts really wanted to save some money, they would stop wasting it with flash offices and stationary that changes every other month. Bloated by a bunch of time-wasters.
Thanks CarJam for attempting to talk sense to them, but you would have more joy with a Hedgehog…. no some many pricks.
— Warren on January 10th, 2011 at 4:44 pm
I don’t understand why this FREE service has been cancelled? Another “wet blanket” decision by the government that make absolutely no sense? I think we pay enough in various fees in this country – which is perfectly acceptable in most instances – however in this intance it is truly disappointing & senseless.
— Jody Menzies on January 11th, 2011 at 2:31 pm
There’s nothing I can add to the comments above – everybody adequately points out just why the free CarJam was so fantastic. But I’m commenting anyway to add my voice to the numbers.
Who’s for a posse to go after Steven Joyce and beat some sense into him?
— WarrenL on January 12th, 2011 at 8:43 am
How is it we are one of the highest taxed countries in the world and yet our goverments take our civil liberties away from us i.e. Our right to raise our children how WE see fit, Our right to services that are already paid for by our taxes etc and can change laws to suit foriegn investors who dont give a rats ……. about us, free trade with countries that sh.t on thier people and us, change laws because of the minorities actions. I’m sick and tired of Labour and National time for a change or to try something new WINSTON PETERS lol

Annoyed.
— Stu on January 16th, 2011 at 9:42 am
Well carjam you tried, but alas our trusty leaders have decided to screw us some more, some thing is going to happen in 2012 and I dearly hope it starts in Wellington and all our leaders are in one place, maybe then they will know what it’s like to be screwed.
— Norm on January 16th, 2011 at 11:29 am
Another typical national government rip off. take another free serivce off us even know its payed for by the tax payer…..But hey least they got a pay rise for the new year PRICKS!!!!. Make the rich richer and the poor poorer that should be the national governments slogan. VOTE LABOUR NEXT ELECTION…..The party for the average kiwi (Majority of us)
— mike on January 16th, 2011 at 11:54 am
Good on you Andrew. Just the type of behaviour that causes all these rules and regulations to be put in place. Having always kept my rego, wof etc, up to date, but getting ripped off by people like you. You’re a dick!
— Jon on January 16th, 2011 at 1:19 pm
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to look up details of a car I’m about to buy just so I can check that I’s not stolen or been written off.
or some other dodgy car that some scum bag is trying to unload on some poor sod like Joe average.
To pay out more money that most of us can’t afford because the NZ Gov thinks they need more money to cover overseas trips
More fees for a free service is as use full as a chocolate radiator.
What happened to, for the people,of the people,by the people?
— Brian Low on January 16th, 2011 at 2:02 pm
This govt is useless. They want to put their bills in our shoulder. My friend wrote immigration minister and IRD office about the Immigration frauds, tax frauds..even giving the person names, business name and their activity this govt taking more then a year to investigate and take action. It’s like developing country. My mistake to vote National Party.
— Indian on January 16th, 2011 at 2:47 pm

— Jono on January 17th, 2011 at 1:49 pm
carjam was an awesome website, whenever i wanted to purchase a car , i could check the history, to see if the seller is legite or not about specs and so on….
the government has taken away this free service now.which in my opinion, is just another way for them to make money of the public!
— anonymous on January 17th, 2011 at 5:16 pm
penny pinchers thats the only words for the goverment oviously the car crime rate is dropping too much for them to handle i quite frequently buy new cars off trademe and out of the paper or just off the street and the first thing i have always done is carjam it to see if it is stolen if its a lemon if its certified or not i am a real car enthusiest and not all my cars are stored at my place this is the easiest way iv had to keep a tab on rego on all my cars as it is they keep pushing up the price of rego so iv well and truly payed my money to them with having a few cars it is very expensive with the price of acc on all of them yet i can only drive one car at a time and they cant even give me a free way of keeping up to date. just looking at my rego sheet without the cost of acc rego would only be 43.50 pus gst a year surly they can work this out good on ya carjam hope the future works out better
— ryan on January 17th, 2011 at 5:48 pm
Good on you CarJam for doing your best to keep access to the LTSA vehicle information. I have signed the petition and e-mailed the minister. Next time I get a chance I will talk to the PM about this issue.
I hope you are able to keep the site going for now with paid reports. All the best.
— Garth on January 17th, 2011 at 9:34 pm
Carjam now sucks
— anon on January 17th, 2011 at 10:40 pm
Sorry Anon. Please advice how it can be improved in your opinion? Cheerio
— Anton on January 17th, 2011 at 11:11 pm
Steven Joyce! Shame, shame, shame. We already pay for this information through our car registration. Just like fuel prices, there is govt tax on fuel. Then there is gst on fuel; another tax. Now there is a another payment on something we already pay for.
Shame on you Mr Joyce.

Everyday and in every way the Government finds new ways to rob the people. Whether they be National, Labour, Green or Maori they are all the same bunch of political give me more merchants.
But they really love you all (honestly) well at least in the run up to an election, after which it is back to the same old same old.
— annon on January 20th, 2011 at 6:50 pm
What a shame Carjam is no longer free. we use carjam alot as we are trying to find a decent toyota but now carjam is restricted to 3 checks a month. we have quite a problem with checking cars out before we decide to buy them. carjam has also saved us HUGE dollars as we checked out several cars on carjam and they came up as dodgy. thank you sooo much carjam for existing but F**k you goverment for stuffing up carjam.
— Brad on January 20th, 2011 at 9:54 pm
Hi Brad, you can also now earn extra free lookups when purchasing CarJam Reports.
— Anton on January 20th, 2011 at 10:01 pm
Don’t worry everyone, we will not require Carjam soon, with the way petrols going it will be $5 a litre by the end of year an car rego’s will be a $1000 we will not afford to drive our vehicles anymore.
— Ben on January 22nd, 2011 at 11:09 pm
money…money…money…money…That’s all it comes down to. Thanks CARJAM for the excellent FREE service over the years. Thanks Steven Joyce for nothing!
— Nigel on January 23rd, 2011 at 8:27 am
This sucks – the reason carjam was the best for me was how convenient it was. Now I must register… I understand that it’s not Carjam to blame but not happy!
— Kevin on January 23rd, 2011 at 10:18 am
Steven Joyce has no mandate.
Who voted for him ?
He is another know it all school teacher who could not cut the mustard in the real world, and did not have the balls to stand in his area electorate.
He sneaked in as a LIST MP

The positives for maintaining free access for information, already on file and paid for, outweigh the negative. For those like me who have used this information in a number of ways to ensure personal safety and security, please sign the petition, then identify your local MP, http://www.parliament.nz/en-NZ/MPP/MPs/MPs/Default.htm?pf=&sf=&lgc=1 (view all)and email your concerns to both MP and Stephen Joyce.
— neil on January 27th, 2011 at 8:09 am
Hi all, I am in the middle of serching for a certain type of vehicle and Carjam has helped me heaps over the last few years, pity it couldn’t keep the free services, but big thumbs up to CARJAM, i will say one thing though, I WILL BE ASKING ANYONE THAT I PLAN ON BUYING A CAR FROM PRIVATELY TO PLEASE PROVIDE A FULL CAR JAM REPORT FOR POTENTIAL BUYERS LIKE MYSELF, ATLEAST THAT WAY I KNOW THAT THEY ARE BEING OPEN AND HONEST WHEN SELLING ME THEIR CAR.
One thing I would ask carjam to do is have a register for there website where we can varify that the report number is definately for the correct REGO#…Maybe
If they want to sell there car to a decent person and are prepared to be forthcoming with a report you can atleast build some trust with them, but before actually buying I would get my own report just to be on the SAFE SIDE.
— Car Shopper on January 27th, 2011 at 5:01 pm
another goverment dubass rule, why dont they sort the real problems out insead of messing with things like this.
Guys, everyone is frustrated but let’s tone down the language. You can express your opinion strongly without swearing. Thank you.
— Anton on January 28th, 2011 at 9:01 am
Baldrick – you are already paying for that (unless you are not using the right receptacle! lol)
Marc – If the car was unsafe and its defects caused it to hit and kill your mother, would you still call Bob a narc?
My guess is that some new suit in the department has come up with a wonderful idea to impress his political masters thereby justifying his job (Bureaucrat survival mentality)
The issue is does the small extra income stream to the taxpayer justify the extra costs to the taxpayer = users of the service plus extra police work because users cant protect themselves as easily plus extra costs to parts departments and workshops around the country. It doesn’t matter which party is in power they would all snap at the bait of extra income without thinking it through. Except for the Greens – they don’t use cars do they? Or power because they object to most power generation schemes. Or do they? I digress, thanks for a great service Car Jam perhaps I should start hassling the current incumbents.
Ted.
— Ted on January 28th, 2011 at 4:53 pm
Hi. Is it three, free per calendar month (ie resets first of month), or per month from when you first register on the site? Cheers
— Dave on January 30th, 2011 at 10:52 am
It’s per calendar month.
— Anton on January 30th, 2011 at 12:15 pm
Hi … I too will miss Carjam ‘as it was’ as I used to check the plates of new members wishing to join our car club if they hadn’t supplied their car make and model. I will enquire re the charges for this and just bite the bullet and have an account.
There is an upside to the new legislation however.
It does mean that Joe Car Thief is not so easily able to go to the likes of NZ Post, pay a couple of dollars and be given the registered address of any car he’s thinking of ripping off.
I’m aware of a number of car clubs that have lobbied LTSA to have private address information given out.
So some good in this new law but also the annoyance of how it also affects the likes of CarJam.
— Anne on January 31st, 2011 at 11:53 pm
That should read …
I’m aware of a number of car clubs that have lobbied LTSA to NOT have private address information given out.

Anne, these are two separate issues. January changed had nothing to do with April changes re: privacy which is generally a good thing overall. January changes are a disgrace for the current government.
— Anton on February 1st, 2011 at 9:36 am
No surprises here really regarding the government and whatnot. Still, maybe it isn’t such a bad thing to look out the window and see hundreds more bicycles on the road. $2+ at the pump isn’t new either, remember winter 2008, at one stage Premium Octane was $2.16, then THEY dropped the price because of something called a recession, which could be viewed as placating the common folk – and you know THEY can only keep that gig up for so long. Things are heading exactly where they are meant to and this is just one more small tap of the wedge. Have a good moan, write some letters, do what you’ve got to do to feel good… or get proactive and take a step towards a healthier, wealthier world – use human power – ride a bicycle (ok, a bus if you really must) and stop paying rego, stop paying at the pump, by any means practicable stop giving THEM pollies and beauro catz your hard earned… Peace out yo.
— Mukura on February 1st, 2011 at 9:58 pm

I used up by 3 free in Jan, but in Feb the website is still saying I have purchased 3. When will it clock over to zero again
— Debs on February 3rd, 2011 at 3:39 pm
Hi Debs, You have “purchased” 3 in January (ie we gave 3 for free). If you login and go to the main page it will tell you how many left. On 1st of each month we reset to 3 free reports per user (unless you have more if you purchased full reports). It’s 3 free reports per registered user per month. Hope this helps.
— Anton on February 3rd, 2011 at 5:34 pm
Very sad but oh so very typical of Nat/Labour, good on you carjam for wearing the cost of 3 freebies p.m. As for you bob, tone it down fella, not everyone who drives down your street in a car older than ’05 is out to rob you, prob just some poor broke youngster sneaking around the back to visit your daughter…
— Chris on February 3rd, 2011 at 8:10 pm

— jonny on February 7th, 2011 at 2:17 pm
I can’t say I’m surprised about all this. I didn’t vote for these Ba*&$!ds, and I won’t be in this lifetime!!! What do they care? they can afford to fly to the ends of the earth to check out a new project (all on our tab)! I sure as hell can’t! This hurts the buyers, legitimate sellers, and the “auto support industry” but NOT the Govt.
What next… increased GST again? Selling off State assets again? Privatise ACC and Superannuation again?
OH WAIT, THEY WANT TO DO THAT TO US TOO!!!!
Thanks Carjam for the help and for trying to keep free access to what we already payed through the nose for.
— richard on February 8th, 2011 at 11:25 am
About time they started to slow down all the amature dealers and backyard mechanics, free services such as carjam only encourage that sort of behaviour. All registered MTA dealers still have unlimited access to vehicle information so the new law must surely be targeted at all of the backyard, tax evading, crooks out there, AWESOME job another loophole in the system fixed!!! (its not always about money muppets!!)
— G-MAN on February 8th, 2011 at 12:48 pm
what a stupid dick of an idea, hope you enjoed your lil burst of power john key now it’ll be all over this year smd, when i get pulled over for dead rego in my new car, ill tell em send the bill to john key
— scott on February 8th, 2011 at 12:55 pm
G-MAN, you are showing a total lack of understanding.
— Anton on February 9th, 2011 at 8:13 am
It is good sight to check cars out
— Patrick Chapman on February 9th, 2011 at 4:04 pm
To see all of what i have read above is amazing. How one Very Cool Site that helped all of us New Zealanders Try and get it right without a hassle from any outsiders and doing this of our own accord through a site like this is a N.Z. thing made FOR US!! Greed from OUR GOVERMENT IS MIND BLOWING REALLY!!! TO BUSY SENDING ” Our money in every direction but US! Don’t get me wrong we can help when the need arises but to keep charging us for this that and the other is only for there FUTURE gains , not ours. I see really no party making to govt. of not being like this EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
— Sandman10 on February 9th, 2011 at 9:44 pm
Hey people of loyal Car Jam followers, Had a thought. Is it true that 20,000 petitions get recognized if you hand that to them . Can Car Jam send us over internet petition papers that we could sign online and they could print and Deliver? Just a thought!
— Sandman10 on February 9th, 2011 at 10:04 pm
Carjam was great! Shame on the stupid government for getting rid of it, it was stipid and pointless. Good on you carjam for providing the info free of charge for so long
— Finlay on February 11th, 2011 at 1:49 pm
Thanks Finlay. You can still get 3/per month free lookups. Plus you get more free ones when you buy reports.
— Anton on February 11th, 2011 at 2:22 pm
It’s a shame this great resource is being restricted.
My mechanic uses it as a resource to check when wof is due etc etc – as the data is always pretty good.
Shame to see that little service go, who knows what the VIN is on my car? I don’t anymore
— Anonymouse on February 11th, 2011 at 4:37 pm
just another bout of beauracratic bullshit!!!!!!!
— paul on February 12th, 2011 at 7:27 pm
just another bout of BEAURACRATIC BLOODY BULLSHIT !!!
— paul on February 12th, 2011 at 7:29 pm
neather laybor or national will fix any of thes problems as they are both the cause of the problems its time for a new party that is not conected to laybour or national to be voted in
— aj on February 12th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
Hey G-man just FYI big suppliers like Repco use this free service too as most retail suppliers deal with average Joe’s who don’t know much about there cars. Secondly to be MTA registered you still pay for a membership so your paying for it anyways. Amatuer dealers exist as the main dealers usually hike prices and create a a gap in the market for others to enter and that encourages sales hence helps the economy, and promotes a free market system. I think you need to go sit with the other facists in National and think of other ideas to opress the economy
— anonymous on February 13th, 2011 at 5:31 am
OK, went to use carjam and are shocked that its no longer free.
I want to know what part of the carjam website wasnt being used for the exact reasoning the official information act 1982 was bought about.
The Act is an implementation of Freedom of information legislation. It creates a regime by which people can request and receive information held by government officials and bodies. The scope of the Act is extremely broad, and includes all information held by any Minister in their official capacity, or by any government department or organisation (as listed in the Act or the Ombudsmen Act 1975). This includes government ministries, hospitals, universities, schools, the Security Intelligence Service, and even state-owned enterprises. Local government is covered by the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987.
The starting point of the Act is the “principle of availability”: “that… information shall be made available unless there is good reason for withholding it”. “Good reason” is narrowly defined in the Act. Conclusive reasons for withholding information include national security or international relations, that it was supplied by another government in confidence, maintenance of the law, personal safety, or severe economic damage
How is it going to be a matter of national security that I know plate ??? is blue, has a 5.4 L v8 engine and is a 1980 firebird transam for example..
rediculous.
— Kyle on February 13th, 2011 at 7:58 pm
We are what we export, like lambs to the slaughter we put National back in power and act surprised when they act the way they do, same s**t different day, Tax cuts for the rich, GST lifted hurting the poor,ACC and work rights attacks, Public assets sales,The rich getting richer and a goverment favouring the minority, so much for a brighter future John Key and National.THEIR SPIN IS, ACC is broke! yet ACC earnt 2 billion in profit, GOVT debt is significant calling for asset sales! our GOVT debt is at a level envious to many other countries and whats 10 billion going to do.KEEP the profit of these companies in NZ, I am already a owner as a New Zealander, mums and dads are struggling to buy milk let alone shares to a company that will only lift prices to keep share holders happy, forgeting about the family strugling to pay their power bills.Wake up, lets make a differnce on the 26th November, its time for a change, New Zealand for all New Zealanders, vote Labour
— Mark on February 14th, 2011 at 9:38 pm
Im glad this isnt free anymore.
— AJ on February 16th, 2011 at 1:25 pm
It is utterly crazy that we need to pay for such basic information. We all know how many shysters there are out there and I have been really shocked at how odometers have been wound back afterwards on some cars I have long since sold on. It was actually pretty creepy and carjam gave me that information before the government stole the candy from the baby with its Jan 1 move. Now thanks to the fatcats in Wgton we have to pay to find out if we are being ripped off or not when we buy our second biggest asset. What next? NZers are constantly being ripped off in every sphere of life now.
— Michael on February 16th, 2011 at 2:08 pm
Aside from the political comment about National being fascists/Labour being socialist monkeys, it is disappointing that this service is no longer completely free. But well done to CarJam for still making available some level of free information. You guys should be applauded.
— Darryl on February 18th, 2011 at 9:27 am
Could someone explain to me how parking tickets issued by parking wardens are now going to be handled. If we do not pay how will they be in a positon to send infringement notices to vehicles who do not pay? The have a plate number, but no address?
Clearly if Carjam.co.nz has it’s access denied to the vehicle registry database, that rule would apply unamiously to individuals and councils etc?
If access is allowed in law for the purposes of revenue gathering, and at the expense of vehicle safety then more issues.
Benefits to me were – Buying a vehicle online that is advertised with x # of km’s to find it has more, or a current WoF when it expired, or as a 2003, when it is a 2001 on the vehicle registry, chekcing WoF history (had 3 in 2 months – why?) all goes towards helping buyers and road users with safe vehicles – not lemons!
Not interested in names and addresses, just vehicle info to make sound, informed decisions.
Do owners selling have to do Privacy Act request for details to secure a sale and provide new owners those details?
Tim
— Tim on February 18th, 2011 at 6:12 pm
Our understanding is that law-enforcment agencies will still be able to access address information.
— Anton on February 18th, 2011 at 6:41 pm
Wo hoo! another great revenue collecting step by the pen pushers
for big brother to further advance us to be in a complete nanny state!
— Hayden on February 21st, 2011 at 7:35 pm
Just came back to carjam to check out when the WOFs on my vehicles will expire. Guess I won’t be doing that any more – I’ll have to go visit my vehicles to find out. This National government has sure put the boot into us all. Hope they’re out on their ear come November.
— Brent on February 22nd, 2011 at 11:12 pm
All i want to know is the fricken chassis numbers so i can give people the right parts. There so many people out there who dont know what they drive , or cant speak english this “was ” a good way to find the info. I dont need to know where they live or any thing else …..just a f–kin chssis .Thanks GOVT your costing me money in lost sales and in turn your losing out with the gst your not getting .
— DAVE on February 24th, 2011 at 11:44 am
Get out, national!
— VBrown on February 26th, 2011 at 1:11 pm
HI THERE HAVE USED CARJAM HEAPS DOES THIS MEAN WE NO LONGER GET FREE INFO ON 3 CARS A MONTH?
— kevin on March 3rd, 2011 at 10:31 pm
Hi Kevin, You still get 3 free lookups a month as a registered user. Cheerio, Anton
— Anton on March 4th, 2011 at 7:12 am
Dishonest National strikes again .Protecting the white colar crims.
— Bruce on March 4th, 2011 at 7:47 pm
Great. I bought a diesel car to keep running costs down and reduce global warming, but RUCs ruin that idea. I’d love a motorbike for cheap running around, but the ACC levy is ridiculously high. Now I have to pay for easy access to car info that might help me decide on buying a car!
Is the country so broke that the govt has to pinch our pennies at every turn?
— Pete on March 4th, 2011 at 10:47 pm
Govt for the people by the people. This site is good for preventing a lot of bullshit being heaped on unsuspecting public. We are constantly asked by the govt. to supply info (for free) so how about the govt supplying something in return
I to am in the car trade and often use CARJAM to check vehicle details prior to parts ordering, and find the charging for this information a farce. The good far out wieghs the bad when it come to restricting the access to OUR in formation!
Chris
— CB SOS on March 8th, 2011 at 9:00 pm
Yeah so I’m not going to be stupid and say the government should die because noone deserves to die. But obviously, I am not happy with this. We already pay so much money on stupid things. this year will be my first time voting as I just turned 18 and the current govt we have is so far not doing anything for me. or us as a country. YES minimum wage is up and YES we pay less taxes… but the gst rise has completely shot that down because dfor those of us on minimum wage, we’re now getting an extra what.. $10 a week? but we’re paying more in groceries and power and water and clothing and fees are going up and now we have to pay for carjam reports. I’ll tell you this, if I buy a car and something is dodgy about it, I will throw this back in your face because there’s nothing I can do about it now. cheers
— Sean on March 11th, 2011 at 9:54 am
Quite typical of the government; take away what is free and make them suckers pay a fee. If they could the government would charge a fee for every breath we took.
— Cassidy on March 15th, 2011 at 10:58 pm
Typical National Government. User pays for everything.
John Key stabs us in the back while smiling to our face.
Remember last time they were in power!!!!
Election Year
Vote Labour!!!!!
— Phil Missen on March 20th, 2011 at 9:34 am
Another tax on the motoring public. Increases in ACC levies on reg, wof and fuel charges, increases in gst on all the same and now this a tax by the back door. If all this extra income was targeted toward a capable nationwide public transport system it would be very hard to complain, but it isn’t. It’s time to change the rules of the game and that can’t be done by bickering on various forums, only by being amongst the rule makers. To do that one must be among those of the main political parties. Apologies to National haters but vote me and things WILL change… or noisy messy moments for some sitting mps careers may result. Dobbing to IRD is always a good start
— Md on March 20th, 2011 at 1:42 pm
Seriously this government is doing things backwards and upside down seriously its no wonder why everyone is moving over to Australia, over there their government knows how to look after families but these idiots pffftttttttt just want want want money money money
— Angry Chic on March 22nd, 2011 at 12:26 am
So, for all the people who are complaining about not being able to do lookups for work – then pay for it. It’s a business expense – same as paying for the other tools you use to do your job.
On the other hand, the motochek fees have all decreased – but you have to be a member for enforcement to register now (I think – to stop road ragers looking up peoples addresses.
— JC on March 24th, 2011 at 4:56 pm
so they think we should pay
— hutchinson on March 27th, 2011 at 1:50 pm
This is absolutely absurd! Why doesnt the government find other ways of milking the public just to pay off the salaries of those fat bitches in parliament and the cabinet. Do you have to go this level? Carjam has provided great service to the buying public, but thanks to National who only thinks about how to screw its citizens….
— reuben on March 30th, 2011 at 11:10 am
Hey there, I cannot see anything in that box that got a picture with 2 letters in it. So i cannot use carjam at all. Any ideas what i could do?
Thanks heaps.

— alle hunter on April 9th, 2011 at 9:11 pm

— Nora on April 12th, 2011 at 12:13 pm
Well, we still give away 3 free ones per registered user per month
And we are actually paying for those now
— Anton on April 23rd, 2011 at 10:54 am
Hi Lablover, try reloading the page. What browser do you use?
— Anton on April 23rd, 2011 at 10:58 am
This is B***sh*t we really need to vote this party out, all they seem to do is find ways to screw us tax payers out of everything, i use carjam at least once every 3months just to see if what im buying is what it is supposed to be and now we have to pay not a happy camper thanks Keys.
— Jim on April 24th, 2011 at 1:20 pm
I voted National in the last 3 elections. I pay a lot for two cars and a motorcycle and this is the straw that broke the camels back! No more voting for National. Have great fun Hon Stephen Joyce.
— Martin on April 26th, 2011 at 4:48 pm
After reading alot of the replies to this FREE CAR JAM i have to agree with the majority, it was an awesum site to get FREE info, but now the govt..has made user pays again..I wonder how the high an mighty sit there with head up knowing they r ripping of the poor who cant access free sights..look at the f… ifiots that sit there thinking they r doing well for the country bullshit as long as they have our hard worked $$$ so they can trip overseas, flash cars, houses paid, good pay packet, so who would give a shit bout the ordinary NewZealander that is working for a living that is why we are charged for everything…(thanks NATIONAL for a shit load of nothing) Take a look at the country that is why all are heading overseas better govt…pay packs NewZealand will never compare..????
— Debz on April 28th, 2011 at 9:37 am
God help us if National gets in again, especially if Brash does as well. Anyone can see that Keys lately has been shitting his pants that he could ( or should ) lose, so he comes up with this shit to con New Zealanders once again. Vatican puppets that they are.
— shayne on April 30th, 2011 at 10:25 pm
national has got to go they tell shit shit shit just want money money money they suck just want to take every ones money to buy them flash things and nz has to pay the cost
— antony on April 30th, 2011 at 11:05 pm
Yep I see Nationals gonna stuff around with the Kiwi Saver, where is the encouragement to save for our retirement, also I was riding a 100cc scooter to work 7km away to try and save money, so what did National do whacked the rego up to $420 for the year. I hope the ordinary working person vote these mongrels out.
— Patrick on May 11th, 2011 at 5:05 pm
..it doesn’t matter which government is running the country!!! they hav and always will suck nz dry!
— joehoodie on June 4th, 2011 at 1:57 pm
Another bad decision from our Govt. How many more taxes will be imposed on tax payers to pay these idiots a salary. Car Jam was a great tool for the New Zealanders and now our politicians want to make money out of this also. Shame on our government, you guys were voted to look after common man but not for meeting your ludicrous expenses.Do something good for us?
— Rajiv on July 25th, 2011 at 5:55 pm
Site is inacurate, – many vehicle details are not up to date
— Tintin on August 11th, 2011 at 11:01 pm
Thanks Carjam
Well im glad that the information is still available at a small cost thanks to carjam for those ”Free” reports for so long. You dont miss it till its gone.
Still i wonder how many remeber that John key was instrumental in the run on nz currency that caused the 80′s share market crash? and this man is surposed to be working on our behalf for our interests…… the best is yet to come!
— ian c on August 23rd, 2011 at 3:05 pm

John Key and national are far better than any of the other clowns that want to run this country 2 ticks National! Suck it up ladies, 3 free, then 10 bucks for a heap more is chicken feed.
— Mac on November 22nd, 2011 at 6:55 pm
Typical National Government always feeding at the trough. All I will add is Keys to Ruin you can Banks on it Oh yes good luck with the 50cents pay rise.
— wayne on February 12th, 2012 at 8:20 am
Paying for ONE report isn’t so bad…. but it adds up… If I buy one report for every car I am interested in then there’ll be no funds left in the end to purchase the car I want because i would have wasted all my $$$ on reports!!… Reports for a price is fine by me, as long as it’s within reason which it ISN’T.
The rich get richer, the rich continue to vote National… and it’s the rich that would happily pay for reports because they can do so without burning a hole in their pocket.
